These days especially, we are flooded by portrayals of superficial love superseding anything of substance. Fortunately, we have Ms. Carmen Rodgers who has blessed us all with a poignant, seemingly autobiographic, composition of love and loving without condition in the new millennium. Her album, "Free" was just what I needed to put my own love into perspective.

When I finally opened and listened to Carmen's masterpiece, (O.K. Drake, you were right) I was surprised by the atypical musical compositions throughout this CD. Not to mention, the fresh spin on familiar scenarios for themes not often breached on your typical soul LP; you will learn as I have that Free is anything but typical. Whether you are lost in new love, remembering a lost love, or losing your current love, I am certain her sultry lyrics and willful delivery will unearth feelings (good and bad) not thought of in years.

"Free" is the cure for love without substance. On that premise, "Ain't No Time" serves in reverence to the days when there was nothing more important than spending endless time with your love. I can actually picture Carmen writing in her journal recounting a carefree day totally consumed with her lover; describing every aspect of what made the time so special. We all remember the days when hours seemed like minutes with our lover, and new love's only recess was the time it took to dial their number to pick up where you left off in person. Certainly there is truly "no time like time spent with your lover".

"Missing You" is the consummate ode to times when lovers are separated either mentally or physically. She yearns for a missing love that, for some reason, cannot be totally fulfilled. This is not always a bad thing if the memories from this experience are so fresh in your mind that the mere thought can still take you to a special place. The best part of this song is that it gave me the feel of a live performance (I'm coming to Texas to see you Carmen!). You can almost smell the smoky lounge and see Carmen delivering her soulful balladry. The worst thing in the world is to wonder if there is anything that you could have done differently to actually have the love of your life with you right now. "Don't be sleeping".

My momma used to say, "Shit or get off the pot". "Maybe One More Try" is a question that needs to be asked when a relationship is at a crossroad. The point when one realizes that comfort and fear are the only things keeping a failing relationship on life-support. "Try Again" asks the question, is a diminishing relationship worth saving one more time? When is it time to be out? Are you in love with the idea of being in love or are you loving what the relationship once was? The harsh reality of the questions raised in these tracks cannot be denied. You cannot have a relationship based on make up sex; can you?

Acoustically, there are not many songs as beautiful as "Sea of Lovelessness". This wonderfully written song is a vignette of three stories depicting the darker side of love and circumstance. Geno Young contributes his immeasurable talents to this song, my second favorite track on the CD, by the way. The first story depicts unrequited love; the story of how a woman's dysfunctional need to be loved contributes to what will become a never ending search for love in all the wrong places. In story two a man chooses to cultivate corporate success without regard to home, a recipe for disaster. Finally, the last story describes how the worst love of all is the love that will not allow you to move on. All of these stories are so eloquently depicted that Carmen's own vulnerabilities seem to become exposed. She not only sings the song but feels the song along with us.

Have you ever been in a situation when you know there is baggage preventing a relationship's natural progression? New love can be so fragile, especially when scars from the previous are unhealed. It's been my experience that an innate defense mechanism will keep that next situation from inflicting added hurt. Sometimes the best way to go is with trepidation but when is it time to let your guard down? The title track "Free", describes a situation where psychologically she diagnosed this ill and is willing to invite her lover to a better place, beyond both their insecurities. It is such a comforting song because it is delivered in a way that we are in the place of her lover struggling to move on.

In Carmen's world love exists as something to be cherished, remembered and most of all shared. Carmen was able to relay her every word as if we were listening to a narrative novel. So picturesque in its descriptions that you will hang on her every breath. The best thing about this album is the fact that she never professes to be teaching us. To the contrary, she is learning along with the progression of every note.

When you listen to this album you are invited to come free of all preconceived notions of what love has been for you and allow yourself to remember the good and bad of past relationships. Let this new-found freedom take your own love to a point of prominence in your life. Masterfully, Carmen has created a world where love is more than the physical; it is all encompassing, complete and without prejudice. Free is not a fairytale of happily ever after but an all too real depiction of loving; you will be so very pleased to be set free.

Yolanda Johnson | Violet Flower

Boasting a confidence that will defy you to believe that this is only her sophomore effort, 'Violet Flower' gets the message through without being over-the-top or preachy. You will soon see that Yolanda is in a league of her own, with songs that put me in the mind of Sy Smith, Conya Doss and Erykah Badu. You are totally drawn into the story of her world through these songs of life, love, struggle and sacrifice. There is no way you will be able to turn off this disc once it reels you in with its almost aromatic lyricism and polished vocals. Lyrically she seem s to be able to personify what is in her soul beyond that of the typical song writer...

'Fly Shine' has a transic rhythm that her voice seems to melodically accompany as if it another instrument. "Don't be afraid to let your light shine" is a message that should resonate to uplift every one of us who has at one time felt inadequate. She sings about the unbelievable power that exists in all of us to transcend whatever situation we could find ourselves trapped in. Her prose certainly "Shines" on this track leaving me to think that she has had to endure tribulation in her personal life only to rise stronger and smarter.

Have you ever wanted to ask why do people do some of the stupid shit that we see everyday? Then you need to hear, 'Keep It Moving'. The why is answered in this silky soul ballad to growing up and learning from the fast talkers that can take advantage of innocent dreams. The resonating message in this song talks about the infinite symmetry of the universe that is karma. Oh yes it will come back around!

The song we can not wait to pump up is 'Individual'. This is a must hear, you better go get this CD (you can not have mine, thanks Abby!!). It is so cool to hear her sing about the stupid ass stereotypes that we all find ourselves aspiring to become. I love the message in this song because it preaches the fact the God does not make junk!!! (Can I get an Amen??) There is nothing wrong with doing it your own way.

'Running' is an ode to the woman that always has your back. When you have a good thing you better treasure it. This song illustrates the benefits that come from taking care of your lover the way you are supposed to. A beautiful cut that takes me to the feeling of new love and the way we tend to go over and beyond for the ones we choose to share our souls with. Deeper than that, this song tells of true love and the journey anyone would take for a soul mate.

Every time you listen to Yolanda's vocal delivery you are going to go with her on a journey not unfamiliar to anyone who has loved, lived, suffered and triumphed. 'Doing Dirty' is yet another journey that I loved taking. The saucy vocal on this track will make you think twice before you begin questioning your lover. I am impressed at how the stage is set and Yolanda delivers a cool retort to her lover's sudden interrogation. It seems strange to me that insecurities rather auspiciously creep in hand and hand with infidelity. OK? Now you get the picture; the "sister girl" in Yolanda comes out to turn the tables.

It's not everyday that I find and artist who can write as prolifically as they can deliver an album lyrically. I was astounded at how masterfully Yolanda has been able to pay homage to soul music's masterful griot like techniques just as Jill Scott, Earth Wind and Fire, and Fertile Ground have been able to do in recent times. She stands as testament that soul music should resonate within ones soul and not simply the passions of lust and greed that are oft times spewed over the airwaves. Just as the 'Violet Flower' can vary in color from purple to white to pink to yellow in its physical appearance, 'Violet Flower' the CD, will transform your imagination with every songs poetic imagery.

Amy Winehouse | Frank

Born and raised in North London, Amy Winehouse spent her teenage years balancing school and boyfriends with hours locked in her bedroom, ears glued to classic song chord changes. She grew up on the sweet sounds of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Ray Charles. But her voice was clearly living a secret life, staying out, getting high, breaking down, going to prison and violating parole. At least it sounds that way.

She might sound like a 40's jazz singer, but she's using smart hip hop beats and lyrics for today's listener. Her style is not for the candlelit basement. It's out there living in the real world of Gucci bags, Diesel underwear, high heels, breast implants, weed after school, cheating airhead honeys and runaway crushes. So instead of singing songs like 'Dancing Cheek' To Cheek, we get 'Fuck Me Pumps', and are all the better for it. Forget about torch themes from yesteryear this talented young femme fatale is going to tell you like it is at any cost.

Her father's tutelage, enabled her to pick up some serious exposure to the classics like Sarah Vaughn and Dinah Washington. From Ella to Dinah, she felt her way forward through the old greats. She conjurs up the eloquence and technical aspects of Ella Fitzgerald while delivering cutting edge, sometimes crass, lyrics reminicent of my girl Nina Simone.

The irony in her music is what makes her album so cool. In the album 'Frank', Amy is able to deliver "technically faultless" jazz vocals, and then she knocks the shit out of a bluesy soul track. The paradox has to be heard to be believed!!! While Amy was studying the jazz icons of her father's childhood, soul music was going through a metamophasis of its own. Suddenly Hip Hop leaked into her headphones. Amy was digging Mos Def for his positive message, and by extension making room for Talib Kweli, The Roots, Nas and Erykah Badu. It is not hard to believe that eventually concise socially conscious lyrics, jazz enunciation and feisty attitude were coming together to form Amy's own thing. You can see it in the raw on 'Frank'.

Amy's debut collection reveals a singer who can sing for the heart but also finds light and shade in the city turbulence. There is mischief amongst Amy's confessions. In 'Fuck Me Pumps' she pokes fun at "girls who genuinely think they have to go out and meet an athlete, and then their life will be perfect". 'I Heard Love Is Blind' is a mock admission of love-cheating with a look-alike. 'Close To The Front' deals with the three infatuations of Amy's life, starting off with her science teacher. Another standout on the album is an update of the old standard 'Mr Magic'; this song finds Amy serenading a somewhat combustible, stress relieving, metaphorical 'lover' (hmmmmmmm).

This album also catalogues her trials and tribulations in the jungle of love. 'What It Is About Men' is as hard on herself as it is about the un-fairer sex. 'Stronger Than Me' tries to make a man out of a passive paramour. The beautiful blue-black ballad 'Take The Box' was written right after the "returning belongings" moment in a break up. Meanwhile, the incendiary, chandelier-shaking vocal on the piano and voice piece 'You Sent Me Flying' graphically captures the intensity of new love.

You should own this album!!! This is not some white girl from London singing what she read in a book; this is a street savvy, jazz, hip hop, street poet with edge and soul. She's young, but I can feel that she has had the experiences that it takes to contrive her lyrics. I have enjoyed this album immensely. If you have style and an appreciation for lyrical content, you will get what she is trying to tell us in 'Frank'.

Amel Larrieux | Morning

Amel Larrieux seems to forever be best known as the original songbird half of the group Groove Theory. Her smooth, and somewhat jazzy, vocals still echo the 1995 hit "Tell Me" in music heads who remember the verge of the neo-soul genre ( I hate using the term Neo Soul). But to those who have followed the solo growth of this soulstress, the echo is a novice whisper.

Don't get me wrong, Larrieux's debut with the duo was well worth the spins and units moved, but this singer has evolved. Her third solo disc appropriately titled "Morning" called "a tight, 10-song set that's Grade-A prime choice" by Billboard shares yet another new light on music and Larrieux's singing career.

Amel Larrieux, in conjunction with her husband/co-collaborator Laru, has crafted a mellow, mature album that should appeal mostly to women, especially ones in their 30s & 40s. Morning is a nice change of pace for anyone who's been listening to only commercial urban radio for awhile. Although only 10 songs in length, the CD contains more quality & depth than most albums on the R&B music charts. Although the production is off on a couple of tracks, overall Morning is like a refreshing sunrise.

In the tradition of her first two albums, Larrieux and her husband-producer Laru wrote all the songs on Morning and continue to blend R&B, Soul, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Folk and World music. The best track, by far is "Weary," a song about longing for a lover. It's dripping with emotion and sensuality, as is the lead song, "Trouble," a fun, jazzy song about being smitten. The fact that Amel and her husband didn't seek any help from outside writer or producers turns out to be both good and bad. It's good because they obviously know what they do and don't like, and what you hear is a well-defined, cohesive package. But it's also bad in that a couple songs, "Magic" and "Mountain of When", flow poorly and sound disjointed.

'Morning' further illustrates that there is no limit to what this song bird can bring to the table. Don't get it twisted, 'Morning' does not surpass the spectacular and flawless standard set by 'Bravebird' (but what does); however, it stands on its own as a masterpiece of simplicity in it's composition. You are definitely missing something if you are not moved to cop this album. There is no other soul singer with the voice of Amel Larrieux, her tones and mellow inflections soon envelope even the most critical listener, almost hypnotic in its device you have no choice but to surcome. Aptly titled, 'Morning' will refresh and invigorate the soul.

Natalie Gardiner

Let me give you a little background on this lady before I give you the LOW-DOWN on her "milky soul" record. She was born in Uppsala, Sweden; with a father from Ghana and a Swedish mother, Natalie's passion for singing and songwriting began early. Natalie moved to Stockholm in 1998. She paid her dues working with different bands and producers, when she ran into producer RMJC, who had just recently started the Ramjac label.

In 2003 her debut 12" was released; let's just say that this is where the magic began. This EP release got much deserved attention on the underground soul scene. The buzz was so loud Natalie and RMJC started working on the 13 soothing tracks inspired by the likes of Anita Baker and especially Sade, that would eventually become her debut joint. Natalie and RMJC picks up on that beautifully blue soulful vibe throughout this album, seamlessly meshing the songs together in a story of hopeless love that yearns to be returned.

Natalie Gardiner's album has become somewhat of an underground sensation with fans all around the world, including high profile DJs such as Gilles Peterson, Benji B and Vikter Duplaix. Natalie has been described as one of the most interesting voices around today and her album has been called the finest example of the European soul movement.

The inseparable Stockholm duo of Ramjac and Natalie Gardiner is amazing!!! Gardiner's vocals are in full-on Sade mode and as breathtaking as they are (and they most certainly are) it's Ramjac's original production that leaves our jaws on the floor. The music and beats behind "Once I thought your love was good" and "I'm Satisfied" are a curious mixture of hi-tech electro and antique valve keyboards that have to be heard to be believed.

The sound of Natalie Gardiner's voice is surrounded by the power of smooth, silky Soul. Her mothers record collection of soul, jazz & funk was a great inspiration to Natalie's maturity so that anyone can imagine the result when it comes to her smooth voice. If you are into soul music (why would you be reading this if you were not), try to get hold of her debut release (I say try, because this joint is so hard to find in the US that I took it as a personal mission to get it), you'll be glad you did!

Corinne Bailey Rae | Like A Star

I've been looking forward to this CD since I heard that beautiful slice of soul drenched honey-of-a-single' like a Star'. Yes there has been a lot of hype surrounding this young lady, based on this one tune. Well, I'm here to say that you need to believe the hype on this one. Listening to this CD conjures up images of lazy warm summer days chillin' with the one you love.

By the second song you know that this young lady has been in love and knows how to describe the feeling of being in love senses by senses. While her voice is remarkable you are going to find yourself searching for the lyrics to all of her songs on the net (or in the CD jacket) because her writing is unrivaled. This has to be one of the best debuts I have heard in a long time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It becomes self-evident the moment you hear her sing the very first note that it's a slice of sublime Billie Holiday blues delivered with a voice that pins you, in the most persuasive of ways, a voice that floats up effortlessly, full of caress, subtlety and a purity.

The album opener and debut single 'Like A Star' is a sublime slice of laid-back grooves that is perfect for those late night listening sessions. The momentum is continued with the dreamy ballad 'Enchantment' that carries her unpretentious vocal skills with ease. Other highlights include the second single 'Put Your Records On' and the sophisticated 'Choux Pastry Heart' with its melodic magic.

British music has had some what of a face lift in the last five years, they are now a nation proud to have produced such talents as Amy Winehouse, Katie Melua and Joss Stone. Corinne Bailey Rae is another shinning example of an amazing talent nurtured to the point of amazement.

Her self titled debut album has been highly anticipated and she has delivered one hell of a masterpiece. Her style is unique yet familiar with sweet tones that slip blissfully into your life and burrow under your skin. Corinne's voice is that of an icon in the making smoky and hauntingly lasting combined with some legendary licks that could be from the 40's era. It would be too easy to compare her to the likes of Billie Holiday, when she can hold her own as an artist.

Corinne can truly sing, her voice is complimented beautifully by the wide ranging instruments. The lyrics ache with raw passion and a honesty that invites you inside and entices you into Corinne's world. What strikes me most about this album is the balance, the range of emotions is well received and will be interpreted differently by each listener, not an easy task, but Bailey Rae does this effortlessly. This album will appeal far and wide to many different types of fans, but will probably touch the more mature music fan.

With a number 2 single (UK), a sold out UK tour, a bright future is paved for this Leeds, England native. She has only just started and by the extremely high caliber of her work, we can expect so much more in the future. Welcome to the sound of 2006 people!

Van Hunt | On the Jungle Floor

Although he's been behind the scenes for nearly a decade, writing and producing for such neo-soul artists as Joi, Raphael Saadiq, and Dionne Farris; it wasn't until his self-titled debut that Van unt came out as a strong neo-soul force and made a name for himself.

The disc starts out with 'If I Take You Home,' which alerts the listener the 'new' Van Hunt is a strange and exciting departure from the old one. What's new? More upbeat grooves, more rock and roll, and more in your face funk. Personally, I didn't like it when I first listened to the album but it grew on me after repeated listens.

The 'new' Van Hunt channels Lenny Kravitz, Prince, and even the Beatles without overtly trying to copy them. The last Van Hunt album was Chill Out With Your Girl with such songs as 'Seconds of Pleasure,' and 'Down Here in Hell (With You).' The new Van Hunt just wants to party. When the dude screams, 'Get on up and dance,' on the track, 'Ride, Ride, Ride,' you know that he's not taking himself seriously. Nevertheless, there are a few exceptions to his party rule. 'Daredevil,' which is my favorite track of the album, and 'The Night Is Young,' slow things down and show a bridge between this current album and his former one.

The verdict? Give this CD more than one listen. On the Jungle Floor might shock some listeners who were expecting a more laid back sound, but it will grow on you after time. Van Hunt has created one of the best albums of the year, in my opinion, and he surprisingly does not have to imitate anyone or any trend to make that happen."

Cassandra Wilson's New Sound

Cassandra Wilson is poised to unveil her newest CD, Thunderbird, April 4th on Blue Note Records, and with it what Paste magazine calls 'a different sound...broad, open, built around keyboards rather than small percussion instruments and gentle acoustic guitars' in a 4-star review in their May issue.

Wilson will also grace the cover of the May issue of JazzTimes magazine, which hits stands on April 25th with a bold headline that announces 'Cassandra Wilson Returns With A New Sound.'

That 'new sound' is largely due to the presence of a new production team, including the acclaimed Grammy-winning producer T Bone Burnett and co-producer Keefus Ciancia, who lead Wilson's distinctive blend of original songs with blues and pop covers, a potent mix that has been at the foundation of such Wilson classics as Blue Light 'Til Dawn and the Grammy-winning New Moon Daughter, into new sonic realms.

Paste reviewer Martin Johnson goes on to state that the change in music hasn't altered Wilson's overall aesthetic; she's still delving deeply into the roots of the Delta and celebrating its eclectic possibilities, ' as is evidenced by the album's centerpiece, an epic performance of the classic Blind Lemon Jefferson blues 'Easy Rider, ' as well as a spacious, stripped-down version of the traditional 'Red River Valley' on which Wilson's contralto and Colin Linden's slide guitar intertwine seamlessly.

However, from the very first sounds on Thunderbird, the irrepressible opening track 'Go To Mexico, ' which is built upon a sample from New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian band the Wild Tchoupitoulas, it's clear Wilson has delved into new territory. I have an Idea that it is going to be worth the wait. I think that this guy is right where the music for his generation should be right now. He's funky, soulful, and actually has the voice to pull off songs that most artists in his genre would not even attempt.

On his first album, He was "as cool as the other side of the pillow
", with a kind of story telling that made even the nerdiest suburbanite feel like a cool assed pimp.... The title alone speaks volumes about the artistry of the record when it isn't weighed down with preachy sermons of self-love and the like but resigns just one sole record to carry the message and letting the message silently overtone and underscore the surrounding material. I Am is that sole song on this album to directly reference the album title via its subject matter and it does so quite well. Against a clean and mellow soul groove, Lina advertises self-love and self-fulfillment as the only means thru which one can survive the beautiful struggle of life in quite a simple fashion. Less really is more sometimes.

Fans of Stranger On Earth need not worry as Lina hasn't forgotten where she's come from and manages to keep one foot firmly planted in down-home jazz without sounding out-of-date on album opener, My Fix. Being the strongest reminent of "Stranger on Earth", Lina takes the jazz motif of the 30s and thrusts it into 2005 full throttle. She takes the swanky horns, skittering percussion, and DJ scratches and turns them inside out while turning up both the sex appeal and the heat. She gives her most coquettish vocal performance yet, sensually purring about how she needs her man like "butter and bread" and desperately yearning for her fix (the fact that she can be sexual without turning into a tacky ho a small testament to her brilliance.

I feel safe in saying that most album interludes are nothing more than an annoyance. But the fact that the 3 interludes found here enhance the listening experience only attest even more to the album's brilliance. Walking is a mere :33 and is nothing but the sound of Lina walking down a busy street singing an old jazz standard to herself but I'll be damned if it doesn't put a smile on your face. Music is a full 1:32 and is a great example of artistic experimentation gone right, Lina taking a cascading piano line and whatnot and making great use of her operatic pipes to express the broad reach of music itself. And Never Forget is only :39 and is just Lina singing two lines against a string-line in quite an angelic manner but it allows the listener to momentarily catch their breath and brace themselves for the brilliance to come.

Hope, Wish & Pray is just one of the numerous standouts on this near-flawless sophomore opus. The musical premise is fairly simple; a set of strings, faint bassline, disjointed guitar, and skittering percussion create the bed that Lina's subtly pained soprano lays on. And the lyrical concept is fairly simple is premise as well; Lina doubtful of a relationship near turning sour clings onto faith for dear life in hopes of a positive outcome. But such simplicity turns into utter bliss. The uncluttered verses - having a slight numbness to them accentuated by Lina's vocals - emphasizing the unspoken disbelief of the situation at hand crossing a barely-existent bridge into a crystalline hook that has Lina, again in a slightly detached manner, expressing her desire for the future, emphasizing how she expresses hope but underlies it with a sense of doubtfulness so that her vulnerability isn't so evident.

Let It Go is definitely one of the hits. The mellow roll of the production creates a simple groove essential for head-nodding and adds a pensive weight to Lina's lyrics, her encouraging the listener to simply embrace the truth of their life, whatever it might be, and let go of any withheld obstacles preventing personal growth. She exercises her vocal chops a bit more here and demonstrates both her range and agility superbly. Peace & Love had the potential to be a lot more cornball than the title suggests so we should be grateful. The goofy flute notes at the beginning evoke a lighthearted mood that becomes overcast with a subtly somber tone as the rest of the instrumentation kicks in. Lina's message of wishing peace and love to everyone definitely spikes the cheese factor but as with fellow cornball Fly, the effervescence more than compensates.

But after 17 tracks and a hour to spare, Lina decides to reward us for such patience by blessing the finale with quite possibly her strongest recording to date, On My Own. Stepping straight out of a 40s time capsule, the plaintive strings set the stage and allow the hollow percussion taps to rumble through and create a melancholic atmosphere that just oozes with emotion. The instrumental alone speaks volumes about the pain of the situation. But Lina taps into her inner jazz diva and gives quite a controlled yet wounded vocal performance indicative of a true vet. No vocal theatrics necessary to indicate Lina's pain. The subtle intonations and inflections of Lina's range and pitch more than convey her true feelings of pain, heartbreak, despair and hopefulness. A relationship gone sour, Lina starts off a bit detached and numb to the situation, letting the initial shock of her abandonment sink in. Then as she recites the same verses and hooks as sort of a mantra to provide motivation, they roll on and she slowly evolves from feelings of uncertainty and disbelief to a newfound sense of self-love and self-reliance, ultimately arriving at the final stage; acceptance.

Where Lina's debut focused on creating a more artistic and probing fusion of R&B and jazz, this album has a decidedly more simplistic approach; it's more of an R&B album tinged with jazz (and soul) overtones that displays both Lina's growth and untapped potential in a more streamlined (and accessible) package. The production is cleaner and smoother, the lyricism feels more terse and concise yet more personal, and Lina's vocals have become noticeably stronger and more well-defined. She doesn't need to stretch out her range and hit anonymous notes to demonstrate her vocal prowess this time. You discern talent and ability more by her ability to carry a song with no effort versus exaggerated effort.

You gotta buy this album becasues "ISIS" said so..... :-)

Ursula Rucker | 'Ma'at Mama'

This spoken word lady has been rocking microphones for years; she has been compared to legends like Sonia Sanchez and Nikki Giovanni, and performed in world famous venues, impressing audiences in the thousands by her captivating on stage performances. With the microphone switch off, we will be missing Ursula's observations of the world and intelligent ways of thinking, but if the stereo player "Ma'At Mama" plays education through poetry and cool music.

Produced by Anthony Tidd, Ursula has taken a more organic, live instrument, route, with this record. Her pure words compliment the raw musical instruments playing in the background, in the styles of jazz, hip-hop, African rhythms, and more. It combines drum tracks like the Gil Scott Heron songs from "Ghetto Style" album. Each song on "Ma'At Mama" is special, and extremely inspirational.

"Ma'at Mama" is something that young people may not understand but should listen to. It covers topics on sexism, racism, politics, society, segregation, emotional problems, violence, crime and more. Her voice is soothing, not irritating, you can listen to her album from start to finish, without pressing stop. She just flows with the words, they drip from her lips naturally, and like an MC would do in a battle but because she is a spoken word artist her style of story telling is different.

The title has a deep meaning behind it, "Ma'At", is a female Egyptian goddess who represents truth and balance. Mama, well, she is a mother to her children, so over all this record is one for the mind, body and soul, it's a lesson that needs to be taught, so when you listen to this take some notes about life, Ursula is to be heard.

Eric Roberson | Esoteric

Eric Roberson has the ability to sing a song and write lyrics that can touch any one. Known for his brilliant live shows across the globe, Eric is taking the music industry by storm. One of my favourite male vocalists of modern soul, Erro started this music thing from the age of 5, and now a grown folk, he has released some great music, but in my opinion 'Esoteric' is his best. This album will uplift you and take you on a journey. He tells stories in his songs that humans can easily relate to. An artist that is vital to have in a music industry filled with artificialness.

Mr.Roberson brings something fresh to the table with songs that have a sounds for different moments, '4U' is an R&B edged with Dance type track, that shows you his more lively side, as well that song their is 'Crazy' and 'Runaway', other feet movers. Then there are songs such as 'Morning After', 'Rain On My Parade', 'Miles Away', 'Funny Feelings', 'She Went Away', 'Maybe', What Is Love Made of', 'New Born Child' and finally 'Woman'. The album is pretty much a mellow production, my favourite track is 'Funny Feelings', it's an instant classic R&B song, with pro guitar playing and emotionally sung. Eric Roberson knows how to touch people; he has the talent and the gift to be able to do that with ease. It comes naturally to him, which is rare in this industry that is swamped with Popular music.

I am feeling this album all over, from the start to finish, he isn't too soulful but not commercial R&B, and he keeps it in-between the two. I'm surprised that he hasn't received a more vast response in the urban scene and other publications. Eric is an “artist”, someone with soul to share, the performing bug has got to him and he has become an amazing artist to watch. You can't hear another artist like Eric Roberson, which makes him stand out of the crowd. 'She Went Away' is another soul ballad that proves us that Eric can be around, making good music still alive.

Gordon Chambers | Introducing Gordon Chambers

"Introducing Gordon Chambers" is the debut CD from this very gifted artist, as he confidentially steps out of the background to personally present his songs to the masses. The result is an excellent Soul album that sets a very high standard for those that follow in 2005. Not only is Gordon an exceptional songwriter, his vocal skills are outstanding. One has to wonder what took him so long to step up to the "mic".

The album is a journey through the many moods of Rhythm & Blues. "Touch You There" embraces the sound of Marvin Gaye and Motown, "Slipping Away" has a smoothed out UK pop feel, courtesy of the sampled rhythm track of Spandau Ballet's "True", while "Never Fall In Love" one of the coolest Nu-Soul cuts you'll hear this year. Gordon gets your head nodding and foot tapping on the infectious up-tempo groove of "Get Happy" and the melodic "Still In Love", featuring Sara Devine, perfect for the upcoming summer season.

Mr. Chambers will touch your heart on the emotional ballads, "I'll Miss You Most", and "That's When I Fall". As a bonus, Gordon performs his vision of the songs "I Apologize" (which he wrote) and "My Valentine" (wrote this too), previously recorded by my home girl Anita Baker and Carl Thomas respectfully.

Emerging from behind the pen, "Introducing Gordon Chambers"! If you enjoy good music, reminesant of early Brian Mcknight, that will stand the test of time, I urge you to pick up the new CD from Mr. Gordon Chambers and support independent artists.

Yamama'Nym | 2:00 AM

Yamama'Nym was founded in the spring of 2002 and soon became one of the better live acts in the Washington/Baltimore area. 2:00 AM is their debut album and shows what a creative band Yamama'Nym is since all songs on 2:00 AM are original compositions written by the band and their guest musicians.Yamama'Nym is a nine piece collective made up of three vocalists, a DJ and musicans and their sound is funky and soulful with a pleasant live feeling to it. In fact, the whole album captures something of the live spirit Yamama'Nym certainly posses. There's the catchy and energetic Caramel sung by Mike Benett, Myra Mathis and B. Taylor or the equally appealing uptempo and funky Black Cuffie sung by Allison Carney.

Standouts on this album include, "You Still Are", "Mr. Invincible" and "Is This Real?" , a question everybody has asked himself when one falls in love. And if the answer to this question is no, then it's time to sing along to "Love Don't Like Me", a nice midtempo song about the drama of getting no love in return, sung by Myra Mathis and Allison Carney.

Other favourites include "Strip U" with its memorable line 'make love to my soul', that shows that this song has another meaning than the rather obvious title would suggest, and the soulful Soular Tranquility (which is more Strip U Part II since it picks up the aforementioned line 'make love to my soul') that comes with a good sax solo by R. Simmons.Other good songs like Sweet Serenity or Rain won't disappoint you either if you like your music down-to-earth and with a live kick.

2:00 AM is definitley worth buying and made me eager to see Yamama'Nym live (Drake, this is a hint for yo' ass). Don't believe me? Ask Stevie Wonder. He says about her, 'Her voice reminds me of Syreeta (Wright), she's incredible.' Ask Essence Magazine. Wayna was featured in their August issue as one of the 'girls of summer' whose music offers a cool, refreshing alternative to the soggy sameness of commercial radio. If you do ask me, I'll tell you why Wayna is headed to the stratosphere. She's the real deal. Both lyrically and vocally gifted, her style is a mixture of R&B and jazz with just enough hip hop to keep your head nodding.

The Ethiopian born singer/songwriter's graciousness, strength and intelligence would make her successful in any vocation but she has found her true calling as evidenced by her exceptional debut album. 'Moments of Clarity, Book 1' was released on her own independent label, Quiet Power Entertainment. It's available through her site and at CD Baby.

The album features intricate harmonies and songs that offer insight and hope and are a testament to the power of positive thinking, but there is such a heavy groove that you may not even notice at first. We are so in need of artists who represent the best in us; creativity, strength, and perseverance. Wayna doesn't just sing about these qualities, she leads by example."

Don't worry if I write checks/ I write rhymes

Dilated Peoples 20/20

Every good MC loves to bust rhymes over some solid beats, but lately the allure of gold-plated fame and diamond-bezeled dollars has emerged as the madame of commercial rap. In many cases, genuine love for hip-hop has been replaced by a desire for its shinier trappings. So when a group of B-Boys forgoes ego and celebrity to promote authentic hip-hop, they're not just viewed as being rebels; they're seen as revolutionaries. Revolutionaries are definitely manifest in L.A. group Dilated Peoples; two MCs and a DJ who have been a staple of the West Coast underground scene since the mid 1990s. The group's most recent album, 20/20 (Capitol), lets fans know that the group is still seeing clearly. "Don't worry if I write checks/ I write rhymes," group member Evidence boasts on the album's lead single, "Back Again." This line sets the tone for a record with a raw and honest sound that has always served as Dilated Peoples' foundation. The group's live show is also rumored to be one of the best in hip-hop.

Dilated Peoples makes the quintessential "keep it real" hip-hop. Their beats bang, their cuts are precise and their rhymes are sharp. They are like a modern Gang Starr of sorts. The Los Angeles trio of emcee Rakaa Iriscience, emcee/producer Evidence and DJ Babu truly got their start when Work The Angles blew up in 1997. Their impending LP's (00's The Platform, 01's Expansion Team and 04's Neighborhood Watch), have all shown a new level of maturity while sticking to the script. But there is a fine line between making the same album over and over again and just doing what you do best.

In this game you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. Fans cry foul when an artist switches their style up but they bitch just as loud when an artist gets repetitive. As I said, it's a fine line to walk. Personally, I like Dilated right where they are; this is the kind of music I want from them. Too many artists try and be all things to all people, Dilated is just being themselves. While they undoubtedly have their sound down, they have yet to perfect it as this LP still plods along at some points as their others have. As long as they keep trying to perfect it, I'll keep listening and you should too.

Who is Eric Roberson??

Many of you who aren't familiar with the name Eric Roberson, I'm glad to say, you have either heard or sung his lyrics many of times. For you Jill Scott fans, Roberson teamed up to co-write and perform on Jill Scott's "One Time" from her Experience: Jill Scott 826+. Roberson has also co-written Musiq's "Merry Go Round" from his debut album Aijuswanaseing, Vivian Greene's smash "Emotional Rollercoaster" as well as two other tracks on Greene's debut album "A Love Story". Case, 112, Dwele, The Wild Wild West soundtrack and Jazzy Jeff are other albums that Roberson has blessed with his pen or voice.

The Rahway , New Jersey bred, Howard University Alum baritone-tenor who has his own label Blue Erro Soul has been described as "a singer's singer", with a great sense of storytelling. This is immediately present on Roberson's opening track "Couldn't Hear Me" off "The Vault 1.0 & 1.5". The Redhead Kingpin produced track tells a story of a female he met while performing and they fall in love instantly. This love affair soon turns sour due to Roberson's love of music and the time he spends cultivating his skills. This jazzy, yet bass driven track automatically attracts you to Roberson and his style. You sense a high level of compassion that Roberson has for his music thus giving you a great appreciation for him as an artist.

Eric Roberson's The Vault Volume 1and 1.5 are a great testament to independent artist. And with Roberson inking a publishing deal with EMI Music Publishing, he is in a position to not only pull himself out the indy ranks, but many talented artist as well.
Please do yourself a favor and check out Eric Roberson, you won't be disappointed... and don't wait two years to pass on the word either.

Check out Eric Roberson at www.ericrobersonmusic.com

The Revelation Is Now Televised

"The Revelation Is Now Televised" is a great addition to the superb roster, which can already be boasted by the "A Touch Of Jazz" extended family. Full of highs and very few lows "V" does not disappoint and where his voice may not be as dynamic as his peers his songwriting sure as hell makes up for it. This stunning debut takes "V" from out of the shadows and into the spotlight, where he belongs.

Valvin Roane II (better known as "V") was raised in South Jersey, where he hooked up with James Poyser leading him to be introduced to DJ Jazzy Jeff. He first came to the attention of soul lovers when he featured on Jeff"s "The Magnificent" cd in 2002. At that time other male vocalists were about to take to the stage namely Raheem DeVaughn and Eric Roberson, and I think that "V" found himself falling to the bottom of the pile. However, this did not seem to stop him from recording his own tracks and this set is testament to the work he did with "A Touch Of Jazz." We were given a taster last year with the "T.R.I.N.T. EP" but this full-length release is mouth-watering stuff featuring an all-star line up including Jill Scott, Carvin Haggins and Pete Kuzma.

The album opens with a jazzy "Intro", which leads nicely into the Kuzma produced "Confess", easily one of my favourite songs of the year… but it does not stop there. The set moves onto the hip-hop flavoured "Best Friend" featuring Kev Brown, the off-key but subtle "Picture This", and the soothing "Still". The next standout cut is the Carvin Haggins penned ballad "Would You Be Mine" which sounds like it was written as if intended for Musiq Soulchild. The amazing Jill Scott makes her entrance (albeit right at the end) of the atmospheric and moody "Born Again". Earth Wind & Fire are used to good effect on the catchy "Anotha Phase" and the tender ballad "Melody" rounds off this impressive set.

Anthony Hamilton / Heather Headley Tour

By Clover Hope

Anthony Hamilton and Heather Headley will hit the road together this spring, offering a double bill of neo-soul and R&B. Waajeed is a founding member of Slum Village. Newly packaged with a bonus CD of Madlib produced Yesterdays New Quintet instrumentals, "Angles Without Edges" was recorded in Stones Throw's Bomb Shelter studio and shows Madlib at his most jazz-infused, sophisticated best. Executive producer Peanut Butter Wolf estimates that this, the Quintet's debut, was culled from 36 compact discs of music. I will not get up on my soapbox for too long, but I will tell you that it is imperative that everyone "take a red pill", so to speak, when it comes to our musical listening habits. Expand your minds people!!

I know you are like me and hate to hear the same 25 songs being played over and over on the radio. Don't you ever wonder what else is out there? Well I have dedicated much of my adult life looking and preserving good music from independent "INDIE" labels. My mission is to bring this music to the light so that they we can all be deprogrammed. Within the last few years the Music that I have been in love with for over 15 years has be labeled. The label it has been given is "Neo-Soul". Please take a minute to educate yourself on this creative art-form that is in its prime right now.

I was going to try to put all of my thoughts & emotion in paragraph form when I came across one of the best definitions on the net. The magnificent fusion and blend of Blues and Rock, Poetry and Hip Hop, Sensuality and Sexuality has been through a re-birth and has been named "Neo-Soul" Music. This neat little term given to categorize the multitude of what Soul Music is does not go over well with the artists that create and sing the music itself. What is the conflict about? Here is the prospective from both sides of the playing field.

THE NAME . The term Neo-Soul Music can be analyzed by word. Neo, means "new". People who favor the term tend to validate the use of the term by decreeing that it’s definition is largely positive. It could be interpreted in more than two ways, however, the two most popular ways explain that even though Soul Music itself is not new, the fusion that currently molds and dictates the sound and feel of Soul Music is new. Not to mention the influx of young fresh and innovative new artists refreshes the musical art form.

The term Neo-Soul gives the majority a comfort range from which to foster their opinions, likes, and dislikes. Most people deal better with things they can define comfortably. Normally, most people are not receptive to things that are beyond some sort of category or definition. We seek to make things "fit" into a place that we designate appropriate.

So, the bottom line is placing a title on this type of music helps people deal with it’s diversity and tendency to change by giving it one common name. It is easier to deal with one particular type of something as opposed to a myriad of different things. This is an effort to clarify exactly what this form of music turns out to be.
